"Flowery words have been written about his humility, ornate prose about his simplicity. Every report on the new pope, Pope Francis, mentions his bus-catching as though the very act of sharing bum space with others is akin to turning water to wine, or parting the Red Sea. And now the vast hordes of Vatican bureaucrats are turning to taxis, shunning their luxury limousines in case the boss thinks they're being indulgent. Taxis! The horror! Pope Francis says he chose his name because of St Francis of Assisi, who sold all his goods to give to the poor, who stripped the clothes off his back, who begged for garbage to eat and made poverty holy.
